HOW TO CALCULATE OCEAN FREIGHT FOR LCL SHIPMENTS

Knight Logistics applies freight calculation rules in accordance with international FIATA standards.

 1.UNIT OF MEASUREMENT FOR LCL OCEAN FREIGHT

     For LCL shipments, the freight charge is based on:

• • Actual weight of the cargo (measured in kilograms or metric tons)
  • Actual volume of the cargo (measured in cubic meters – CBM)

     Depending on the carrier, shipping route, and transport method:

• • LCL sea freight is usually calculated with the conversion 1 CBM = 1000 kg (subject to carrier rules)
  • CFS (Container Freight Station) handling fees may use 1 CBM = 500 kg (subject to the CFS)

2. HOW IS LCL OCEAN FREIGHT CALCULATED?

     To determine freight charges for LCL shipments, compare the weight and the volume of the shipment and use the higher value:

• • MT (Metric Ton): the actual weight of the cargo
  • CBM (Cubic Meter): the actual volume of the cargo

Example:

A shipment has an actual weight of 2000 kg (2 MT) and volume of 3 CBM.

Since 3 CBM is greater than 2 MT, the chargeable amount for freight calculation is based on 3 Revenue Tons (RT).

RT (Revenue Ton) or W/M (Weight or Measurement): the standard unit used to calculate LCL freight.

Important Notes

• • The minimum chargeable unit for LCL sea freight is 1 RT (or 1 W/M). This means if a shipment’s weight or volume is less than 1 RT, it is still rounded up to 1 RT for freight calculation.
  • On some long‑distance routes or at inland ports, the minimum chargeable volume may be 2 or 3 CBM. In such cases, even if the shipment is only 1 CBM, freight may be charged as 2 or 3 CBM.
