HOW TO CALCULATE AIR FREIGHT CHARGES

     Knight Logistics applies air freight charge calculation rules according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) standards.

1. International Air Freight Charge Calculation

     There are three key weights to understand:

• • Chargeable Weight: The weight used to calculate the freight. It is the greater of the Gross Weight and the Volume Weight.
  • Gross Weight: The actual weight of the shipment including packaging.
  • Volume Weight: A weight based on the volumetric size of the shipment, converted from its dimensions.

     The carrier will charge based on the Chargeable Weight — whichever is larger between Gross Weight and Volume Weight.

2. How to Calculate Volume Weight

♦ For Air Cargo (Air Freight)

     According to international standards, the Volume Weight for air cargo is calculated as:

Example:

• Shipment: 10 cartons
• Each carton size: 60 x 60 x 40 cm
• Total actual weight: 120 kg

Volume Weight (kg) = 10 × 60 × 60 × 40 / 6000

                                  = 240 kg

     Compare Volume Weight and Gross Weight. The higher value is the Chargeable Weight.

• • In this example, Chargeable Weight = 240 kg.
  • Freight cost = 240 kg × air freight rate.

♦ For Express / Courier Shipments

     The Volume Weight formula for express shipments is:

Example:

• Shipment: 10 cartons
• Each carton size: 60 x 60 x 40 cm
• Total actual weight: 120 kg

Volume Weight (kg) = 10 × 60 × 60 × 40 / 5000

                                  = 288 kg

     Compare Volume Weight and Gross Weight. The higher value is the Chargeable Weight.

• • In this example, Chargeable Weight = 288 kg.
  • Freight cost = 288 kg × courier rate.
